You should also stock your car with supplies to help in case you need to evacuate in a hurry. All of your important documents should be easy to locate and should be added to your supplies if you need to take them and evacuate. You should also have all your insurance documents easily accessible.
2. Make an Emergency Plan
Panic is your worst enemy in an emergency. Work out a plan with your family so if you need to shelter in place or evacuate, you can do so quickly. Know where all of your supplies are, and teach children what to expect. Pets should also be trained so you can gather them up and leave quickly. You should know where you will go to evacuate. If you have pets, make sure you have a plan for them as well. It should be easy and quick to prepare your family and pets when you have a hurricane watch or warning for your area.
3. Know Your Local Shelters
Knowing your closest shelters can help keep you safe by letting you get there quickly. Learn where they are and a few routes to reach them in case a road is flooded. You may not have access to GPS navigation, so learning the route is important. If you have pets, locate a pet-friendly shelter to keep them with you or find a local animal shelter.
4. Prepare Your Home
Making sure there is nothing outside your home that can be blown into it and cause damage is important. Pick up fallen branches and secure loose objects. Have supplies to cover your windows and doors and know how to turn off your home’s power. You should also have a carbon monoxide detector if you need to shelter in place.
